Is the steel look right for your house?
Heritage windows keep the character of houses that were built with steel windows. Here is how they compare.

What people worry about, answered plainly
“Our old steel windows are rusting, draughty and single glazed.”
Aluminium does not rust, needs no painting and takes double glazing, while keeping the narrow frames and flat profile of the originals.
“Ordinary replacements would look wrong on a period house.”
We match the layout of the glazing bars to the original pattern where we can, so the front of the house keeps its character.
“I love the steel look but not the upkeep of real steel.”
Powder-coated aluminium only needs a wipe down. Black is the colour most people picture, and white and grey are standard too.
“I want a steel-look screen or door for an extension.”
Alitherm Heritage covers doors as well as windows. Send us the opening and we will confirm the door and screen options for it with your quote.
Rough sizes and a photo of the opening are enough.
We aim to reply the same working day.
Steel look windows, laid out to suit the house
With heritage windows, the details make the difference. These are the choices we agree with you at the survey.
-
1. Glazing bar layout
How many panes, and where the bars sit, to match the original or suit the new opening.
-
2. Which panes open
Steel windows often had small opening lights within a larger frame, and we can do the same.
-
3. Steel-look doors and screens
For a kitchen, a garden room or the back of an extension. We confirm the door options for your opening with your quote.
Handles and stays are chosen to suit the period look, with trickle vents and escape hinges where Building Regulations call for them.

Alitherm Heritage: the steel look in aluminium
Alitherm Heritage is a window and door system from Smart Architectural Aluminium, a British aluminium systems company. It was designed to replace old steel windows without losing what made them distinctive: narrow frames, slim glazing bars and a crisp, flat profile.
Real steel windows are beautiful, but old ones rust, distort and are almost always single glazed. Aluminium does not rust, does not need painting and takes double glazing, while keeping the look.
Steel look windows for period houses
A great many London houses were built with steel windows, from 1930s semis and Art Deco blocks to cottages and conversions. Steel look windows let you replace failing frames with something that still belongs on the house. We match the layout of the glazing bars to the original pattern where we can, so the front of the house keeps its character.
The difference inside is just as noticeable. Old steel windows are often the coldest surface in the room, running with condensation in winter and rattling in the wind. Double-glazed aluminium frames close tightly onto their seals, so rooms that used to feel draughty are warmer and quieter, without giving up the look that made the house worth buying.
Crittall-style windows and doors for extensions
The same look has become popular on new extensions, kitchens and garden rooms. When people search for crittall style windows, crittall style aluminium windows or crittall style aluminium doors, this is usually what they have in mind: black frames, a grid of slim bars and a lot of glass.
To be clear, we do not fit Crittall products. Crittall is a brand name; “Crittall-style” is simply the description most people use for the look. What we fit is Alitherm Heritage aluminium, which gives the same appearance with modern glazing.
Heritage aluminium doors and steel look doors
Alitherm Heritage includes heritage aluminium doors, and we confirm what we can supply for your opening with your quote. A steel-look door or internal screen can sit between a kitchen and a dining room, or open an extension onto the garden. Steel look doors work well where a wide bifold would look too modern for the house, and they pair naturally with aluminium French doors if you want a traditional double door.
What affects the price
We do not publish prices. Heritage windows are priced from the number and size of openings, the glazing bar layout, which panes open, the colour, the glass and the hardware. Doors and screens are priced the same way. Send us photos and rough sizes and we will quote for your actual windows.
Send us your windows
Send photos and rough sizes through the quote form or on WhatsApp and we aim to reply the same working day, Monday to Friday, 8am to 5pm. If you do not need the steel look, our standard aluminium windows on Smart Alitherm 400 give slim frames without the glazing bars.
Heritage window questions, answered
Not sure about something else? Send what you have and ask in the notes. We answer it with your quote.
What are heritage aluminium windows?
Heritage aluminium windows are made to look like traditional steel windows, with slim frames and glazing bars, but in aluminium. They suit 1930s houses, Art Deco homes and period properties that originally had steel windows, and modern extensions where you want the same look. We fit them on Smart Alitherm Heritage.
Are these Crittall windows?
These are not Crittall windows. Crittall is a brand name, and 'Crittall-style' is just the shorthand many people use for the slim, gridded steel window look. What we fit is Smart Alitherm Heritage, an aluminium system made to give that look with modern double glazing.
How much do heritage aluminium windows cost?
The price depends on the number and size of windows, the glazing bar layout, which panes open, the colour, the glass and the hardware. A steel-look door or screen is priced on the same basis. We do not publish prices, because each house is different. Send us photos and rough sizes for a quote.
Do you fit steel-look doors too?
Alitherm Heritage covers doors as well as windows, so a steel-look door or screen can be made to match. They are popular between a kitchen and a garden room, or as the back doors of an extension. Send us the opening with your photos and we will confirm the door options with your quote.
How long do heritage aluminium windows take?
We confirm the lead time for heritage windows and doors when the order is placed, because it depends on the size of the job and our availability. A special powder-coat colour adds 6 to 8 weeks. We carry out a final site survey before ordering.
Can I fit heritage windows in a conservation area?
Steel-look aluminium windows are often chosen for houses in conservation areas because they keep the original look. Rules vary by council and by street, so check with your local planning department before you order. We can give you the details of the product to support an application.
