Windows and doors for Reading homes

A lot of Reading is terraced, and the houses set the shape of the work. Here is what we keep in mind in each part of town.

Victorian terraces west of the centre

Reading grew quickly in the Victorian period. The streets around the Oxford Road and Tilehurst Road are long runs of terraces in the town's red brick, often patterned with silver-grey headers. They have tall sash openings at the front and narrow back additions, so the rear wall usually takes a two or three panel door rather than a wide run of glass.

Caversham and Emmer Green

North of the Thames, Caversham was part of Oxfordshire until 1911. It has larger Victorian, Edwardian and interwar houses climbing towards Emmer Green.

Lower Earley

To the south east, Lower Earley was built from the late 1970s onwards. Its patio doors and first generation double glazing are now reaching the age where people replace them.

Conservation areas

Parts of central Reading are conservation areas, Eldon Square and Castle Hill/Russell Street/Oxford Road among them. There the borough council expects front elevations to keep their character.

What we supply and fit in Reading

Lead times count from the day you order and depend on availability. We confirm yours with the quote.

  • Bifold doors in Reading

Most bifold doors we're asked about here go on the back of a house, often where a kitchen has been pushed out into the side return of a terrace. On a narrow opening, a three panel set with a traffic door gives everyday access without folding the whole run back.

About 10 working days from order, depending on availability

  • Aluminium windows in Reading

Casement and tilt and turn windows in Smart's Alitherm 400 system. The slim frame suits the tall openings in Reading's Victorian houses better than a chunky uPVC profile, and lets more light into rooms facing a narrow back garden. White, black and grey as standard; any other colour can be powder coated to match a door.

  • Sliding doors in Reading

If your Lower Earley or Woodley house still has its original patio door, an aluminium sliding door is the like-for-like upgrade: the same opening, far slimmer sightlines and a smoother run. It suits a wide opening where you want the glass to stay put in winter and slide open in summer.

2 to 3 weeks from order, depending on availability

  • Front doors in Reading

We supply and fit Smart Signature aluminium front doors. Smart's door systems are tested to PAS 24, the security standard for doors. On a red brick terrace, a dark door with a simple glazed panel tends to look right. Send us a photo of the front and we can talk through the styles.

4 to 6 weeks from order, depending on availability

  • Heritage and steel-look windows in Reading

Alitherm Heritage gives the thin, steel-look frame of an older window with the performance of modern aluminium. We suggest it for a period front elevation, or an internal screen or rear extension where you want slender black metal framing. In a conservation area, check with Reading Borough Council before you order.

We also fit aluminium French doors and roof lanterns, and take on new build and commercial work. See every product.

The jobs Reading houses ask for

At the back of a terrace, the usual project is opening up a kitchen: a side return extension or a single storey addition finished with bifold or sliding doors, with a roof light above if the builder has allowed for one. At the front, people want to replace tired windows without losing the proportions of the house, which is why slim frames matter here more than on a modern estate.

In Caversham and Emmer Green the houses are bigger and the rear openings wider, so we talk through bifold against sliding more often. A bifold opens the whole width; a sliding door keeps more glass and fewer frames. In Earley and Woodley the question is usually replacement: what to put in the space the old patio door leaves.

Tilehurst and Calcot sit between the two, with interwar and post-war semis and bungalows on bigger plots and room at the back for a wider opening. Planning an extension there? Bring us in before the builder sets the width of the opening, so the doors and the structure are sized together.

Questions from Reading homeowners

Not sure about something else? Send what you have and ask in the notes. We answer it with your quote.

Do you fit windows and doors in Reading?

We supply and fit aluminium windows and doors across Reading, in RG1, RG2, RG4, RG5, RG6, RG30 and RG31, including Caversham, Earley, Woodley, Tilehurst and Calcot. Send your sizes and photos for a rough quote.

Have you worked in Reading before?

We have fitted in Reading, about 30 miles from our base in Hayes along the M4. Photos and a write-up of that job, with what we fitted, will go on this page and on our projects page once they are ready.

My house is in a conservation area. Can I still have aluminium windows?

Often, but the council may want the new windows to match the pattern of the old ones. Ask Reading Borough Council first. Our heritage steel-look range is usually the easiest fit for a period front.

How long does it take from order to fitting?

From order, depending on availability: bifold doors in about 10 working days, sliding doors in 2 to 3 weeks and Smart Signature front doors in 4 to 6 weeks. For windows we give the lead time with your quote. We confirm the fitting date when you order.

Can I send my own measurements?

You can. Send rough sizes and photos by WhatsApp or the quote form and we give you a rough quote. Before anything is ordered we come out for a final survey and measure.

Who does the fitting?

Our team from Hayes. We supply and fit, so rather than finding a supplier and then separate window fitters or glaziers in Reading, you deal with one company from survey to installation.

We have old double glazing in Reading. Is aluminium worth it?

For many of the 1970s and 1980s houses in Earley and Woodley it is the natural next step. Aluminium frames are slimmer than the uPVC double glazing they replace, so you see more glass, and we talk through the glass options with your quote.
