Are French doors right for your opening?

French doors open both leaves wide and leave the whole opening clear. Here is how they compare.

  • French doors

A pair of glazed doors that open wide. Often the best fit for a narrower opening or a traditional house.

  • Bifold doors

Fold right back across a wide opening, for the whole wall open in summer. Bifold doors

  • Sliding doors

Big panes that glide, keeping the most glass in view. Sliding doors

What people worry about, answered plainly

  • “My opening is too narrow for bifold or sliding doors.”

That is where French doors do best. On a narrower opening a bifold ends up mostly frame and a slider leaves half the gap covered. French doors leave it all clear.

  • “Our old French doors are draughty and hard to lock.”

New doors are made to the exact opening, measured by us at a final survey, and our installers adjust the hinges and check both leaves close and lock properly.

  • “I want doors that suit the house, not a wall of glass.”

Slim aluminium French doors, with side panels if the opening needs them, sit comfortably on a Victorian or 1930s house as well as a new build.

  • “I want matching windows and doors from one company.”

Our French doors are made on the same Smart Alitherm 400 system as our windows, so frames, colours and sightlines match, and one company fits the lot.

Rough sizes and a photo of the opening are enough.

We aim to reply the same working day.

Alitherm 400 French doors: the choices that matter

Tell us about the opening and we go through these with you at the survey.

  1. Showing: doors open outwards, onto the garden.

    1. Which way they open

Outward opening is the usual choice in the UK, as the doors take no room inside and wind and rain press them onto the seals. Inward opening can suit a balcony or a tight patio.

  2. 2. Side panels and top lights

Glazed or solid panels fill a wider opening and bring in more light.

  3. 3. The threshold

A low threshold makes stepping out easier.

Glass in a door must be safety glass under Building Regulations. Beyond that, it is chosen for the view, privacy or sun.

    10-year installation guarantee

Aluminium French doors give you a pair of glazed doors that both open fully onto the garden, with slim frames that do not crowd a smaller opening. We supply and fit them across London, inside the M25 and in nearby towns such as Watford, Reading, Slough and Guildford, working from our base in Hayes. Every pair is made to measure, fitted by our team and covered by our 10-year installation guarantee.

When French doors make sense

Not every opening suits a wall of bifold or sliding glass. On a narrower opening, a bifold ends up mostly frame and a slider leaves half the gap covered. French doors open both leaves wide and leave the whole opening clear, which is why they remain one of the most practical doors for a dining room, a living room or a smaller extension.

They also suit houses where a large modern door would look out of place. A pair of slim aluminium French doors, perhaps with glazed side panels, sits comfortably on a Victorian or 1930s house as well as a new build.

Glass, security and Building Regulations

Glass in a door has to be safety glass under Building Regulations, so every French door we fit is glazed to suit. Beyond that, the glass can be chosen for the room: clearer views on a garden elevation, more privacy where the doors face a neighbour, or better control of heat on a sunny aspect. On security, Smart tests its systems to PAS 24, the UK security standard for doors and windows, and the doors are assembled the same way, with multi-point locking on the main leaf.

French doors or bifold doors?

If your opening is wide and you want the whole wall open in summer, look at our aluminium bifold doors. If the opening is narrower or the house is more traditional, French doors are often the better answer. For a steel-look pair with glazing bars, see our heritage aluminium windows and doors.

What affects the price

We do not publish prices. The price of aluminium French doors follows the size of the opening, any side panels or top light, the colour, the glass and the hardware, and whether the opening needs work before the doors go in. Send us your sizes and a photo and we will quote for your doors.

Get a French doors quote

Send your sizes through the quote form or on WhatsApp. We aim to reply the same working day, Monday to Friday, 8am to 5pm. If you are replacing windows too, our aluminium windows page explains the casement and tilt and turn options on the same system.

French door questions, answered

Not sure about something else? Send what you have and ask in the notes. We answer it with your quote.

Do you fit aluminium French doors in London?

We supply and fit aluminium French doors across London, inside the M25 and in nearby towns such as Watford, Reading, Slough and Guildford, working from our base in Hayes. Our team surveys the opening, fits the doors and guarantees the installation for 10 years.

How much do aluminium French doors cost?

The price depends on the size of the opening, side panels or a top light, the colour, the glass, the hardware and whether the opening needs work first. We do not publish prices, because every opening is different. Send us your sizes and a photo and we will quote for your doors.

Should I choose French doors or bifold doors?

French doors suit narrower openings, where a bifold would be mostly frame. Both leaves open fully and nothing stacks in the way. Bifold doors suit wide openings where you want the whole wall open. If your opening is somewhere in between, we will tell you honestly which works better.

Do aluminium French doors open inwards or outwards?

Aluminium French doors can be made to open either way. Outward opening is more common in the UK because the doors do not take up room inside and the weather pushes them closed onto the seals. Inward opening can suit a balcony or a tight patio. We will go through it at the survey.

What are Alitherm 400 French doors?

Alitherm 400 French doors are made on the same Smart Alitherm 400 system as our casement and tilt and turn windows, so frames, colours and sightlines match. Smart Architectural Aluminium is a British aluminium systems company.

How long do French doors take from order?

We confirm the lead time when the order is placed, because it depends on the job and our availability. A special powder-coat colour adds 6 to 8 weeks. We do a final site survey before ordering so the doors are made to the exact opening.
