Is a roof lantern right for your extension?
Big doors light the front of a deep extension. A lantern lights the rest.
Roof lanterns
Daylight from above, into the part of the room the doors cannot reach, and extra height in a low room.
Bifold or sliding doors
Light and access along the back wall. Often fitted with a lantern, so the frames match. Bifold or sliding doors
What people worry about, answered plainly
“The extension is bright by the doors but dark in the middle.”
A lantern lets light in from above, over the part of the room where the kitchen or dining table usually sits, and adds height to the room.
“I'm worried about leaks where it meets the flat roof.”
Most leaks come from a poor upstand or bad sealing. We check the roof opening and upstand at the survey and tell you what preparation is needed before we fit.
“Roof lanterns are sold online as a box, with nobody to fit it.”
We survey the opening, supply the lantern made to measure and fit it, so one company answers for the job.
“I want it to match the frames of my new doors.”
A lantern can be powder coated in the same colour as your bifold or sliding doors. Ordering them together keeps the colours consistent.
Rough sizes and a photo of the opening are enough.
We aim to reply the same working day.
How roof lantern installation works
A lantern is only as good as the roof it sits on. These are the three things we check and choose with you.
-
1. The upstand
A raised kerb around the roof opening that the lantern frame is fixed to. We check it at the survey and tell you what preparation is needed.
-
2. Where the light lands
Sized to the roof opening, a lantern lights the back of a deep room that the doors cannot reach.
-
3. The glass
On a south or west facing roof, glass that cuts glare and heat keeps the room comfortable. Over a kitchen you may want glass that quietens the rain.
If your extension is still being built, send us the drawings early so the opening can be built to suit the lantern.

Installation
The balance is due before delivery. Our installers fit the lantern onto the prepared upstand, seal it and check it is weathertight.
10-year installation guarantee
An aluminium roof lantern brings daylight down into the middle of a flat-roof extension, the part of the room that bifold or sliding doors cannot reach. We supply and fit roof lanterns across London, inside the M25 and in nearby towns such as Watford, Reading, Slough and Guildford, working from our base in Hayes. Each lantern is made to measure, fitted by our team and covered by our 10-year installation guarantee.
Why add a roof lantern
Kitchen and living extensions are often deep. Big doors light the first few metres of the room, but the back of the space, where the kitchen or dining table usually sits, stays dim. A roof lantern solves that by letting light in from above, and it adds height to a room that might otherwise feel low.
A lantern also changes the feel of the space after dark and in winter, when you are looking up at the sky rather than out at a cold garden.
Aluminium frames, made to measure
Our roof lanterns are aluminium, with double-glazed panels. Aluminium is strong enough for slim glazing bars, so you see more sky and less frame, and the powder-coated finish does not need painting. Every lantern is made to the size of your roof opening, measured by us at a final site survey before anything is ordered.
Matching your doors
Roof lanterns usually go onto extensions that are also getting new aluminium bifold doors or aluminium sliding doors. Ordering them together means the frames are the same colour and the job is planned as one. White, black and grey are our standard colours, and any other colour can be powder coated to order with a guarantee, though special colours add 6 to 8 weeks.
What affects the price
We do not publish prices. Every roof is different, and a figure online tells you little about your extension. The price of an aluminium roof lantern follows:
- the size and shape of the lantern
- the glass
- the colour, especially a special colour
- the condition of the roof opening and upstand
- access to the roof
Send us your sizes and a photo and we will quote for your lantern.
Planning and Building Regulations
Many roof lanterns on single-storey extensions do not need planning permission, but it depends on the house, the extension and whether you are in a conservation area, so check with your local council before ordering. Building Regulations apply to the roof as a whole, and your builder or architect should confirm what is needed for your extension.

Roof lantern questions, answered
Not sure about something else? Send what you have and ask in the notes. We answer it with your quote.
Do you supply and fit aluminium roof lanterns?
We supply and fit aluminium roof lanterns across London, inside the M25 and in nearby towns such as Watford, Reading, Slough and Guildford, working from our base in Hayes. Our team surveys the roof opening, fits the lantern and guarantees the installation for 10 years.
How much does an aluminium roof lantern cost?
The price depends on the size and shape of the lantern, the glass, the colour and the condition of the roof opening and upstand. Access to the roof also plays a part. We do not publish prices, because every roof is different. Send us your sizes and a photo and we will quote for your lantern.
What does roof lantern installation involve?
Roof lantern installation starts with the roof opening and an upstand, a raised kerb around the opening that the lantern sits on. The lantern frame is fixed to the upstand, the glass fitted and the joints sealed. We check the opening and upstand at the survey and tell you what preparation is needed before we fit.
Will a roof lantern leak?
A roof lantern fitted properly to a sound upstand should stay weathertight. Most leaks come from a poor upstand or bad sealing where the lantern meets the roof, which is why we check both at the survey. Our installation is covered by a 10-year installation guarantee.
Can a roof lantern match my bifold doors?
A roof lantern can be powder coated in the same colour as your bifold or sliding doors, so the extension looks finished as one piece. Ordering the doors and lantern together is the simplest way to keep the colours consistent.
Do I need planning permission for a roof lantern?
Many roof lanterns on single-storey extensions do not need planning permission, but rules depend on the house, the extension and whether you are in a conservation area. Check with your local council before you order. Building Regulations also apply to the roof, so your builder or architect should confirm what is needed.
